A subtractive practice. A search for light.
TRIBE Gallery is proud to present Lumières Noires, the first solo exhibition in Switzerland by Moses Mous, a Cameroonian artist whose visual language bridges technical precision, emotional tension, and narrative depth.
At the heart of his practice lies a demanding and highly personal use of sgraffito: using a razor blade, the artist incises through layers of acrylic to slowly reveal each image, rather than apply it. The portraits that emerge, often solitary, introspective, and dignified are carved into the surface, creating a subtle play of textures, shadows, and light.
At the same tiEach piece in Lumières Noires is a site of excavation, not only of the surface, but of memory, loss, and recovery. Some works draw light from blackness; others layer chromatic density over pain. All speak to the silent force of persistence.
A rising voice with rooted conviction.
me, the use of plastic introduces a decisive ecological dimension. By transforming a material associated with excess, permanence, and environmental crisis, Yéanzi repositions matter as a site of reflection on responsibility, resilience, and potential regeneration. His practice thus operates at the intersection of material research, social inquiry, and environmental consciousness.
While grattage remains the core of his vocabulary, Mous also incorporates bursts of vivid color, juxtaposing the rawness of incision with tonal warmth. This tension gives his work both material strength and poetic nuance.
With academic training in French literature and art history, Moses Mous has developed a mature, formally coherent practice that is gaining international attention. He has exhibited in Paris, London, Dakar, Casablanca and Yaoundé. His works have entered private and institutional collections.
With Lumières Noires, TRIBE Gallery reaffirms its commitment to showcasing artists with technical mastery, long-term vision, and a capacity to shape new visual grammars.
This exhibition marks a decisive moment in the artist’s trajectory and invites collectors, curators and professionals to engage with a voice that combines introspection and formal innovation.
